21% less student dropout

GSU's Pounce chatbot reduces student dropout 21%, validated by independent Randomised Controlled Trials from Brown, Stanford, and Brookings

A simple SMS chatbot that nudges first-generation and at-risk students through administrative barriers before the first day of college, validated by Randomised Controlled Trials, the gold standard almost never found in AI case studies.

Friction

GSU lost hundreds of admitted freshmen every year before the first day of class, not because students changed their minds, but because of small practical obstacles: proof of vaccination, financial aid forms, and housing deadlines. Manually following up required 10 additional full-time staff members.

Breakthrough

Pounce is an SMS chatbot, no app and no download required, that answers questions 24/7 and sends personalised reminders at precisely the right moment based on each student's enrolment status. Under 1% of messages required human escalation. First-generation college students, who most needed help, sent 31.7% more messages than average.

Impact

21.4% reduction in summer melt in year one. Freshman final grade +11 points (more than a full grade point) for students who received messages. 5-6 percentage point higher probability of earning a B or above in courses where Pounce was active. 50% fewer withdrawals due to outstanding bills. 1,300 additional students per year retained. 7% higher graduation rates combined with broader data approach.

Problem

Higher education's most vulnerable students are not dropping out because of academics. They are dropping out because of paperwork: a form not submitted, a fee not understood, a deadline not known. These are fixable problems. The only barrier is scale.

What made it smart

The RCT validation is what makes this case exceptional. Brown, Stanford, and Brookings independently confirmed the effect sizes, not just internally reported KPIs. That rigour is almost entirely absent from enterprise AI case studies, and it means the numbers are reliable in a way that most cases in this database cannot claim.

Technical approach

Conversational AI via SMS with personalised message logic based on each student's real-time enrolment status, financial aid position, and housing registration. Pounce integrates with institutional systems to generate contextually relevant nudges. Human advisers handle the less than 1% of messages that require escalation. In 2024, a $7.6M federal grant funded expansion to math and English courses at partner universities.

Strategic lesson

The most impactful AI interventions in social systems are often the simplest technically. A text message at the right moment, to the right person, about the right obstacle. The intelligence is in the timing, not the complexity.

Reflection question

In your organisation, where are the people you serve dropping out of a process, not because they cannot or will not complete it, but because they do not know what step comes next or when?
